Recession
What Is Recession?
“A recession is a significant, widespread, and prolonged downturn in economic activity. A common rule of thumb is that two consecutive quarters of negative gross domestic product (GDP) growth mean recession, although more complex formulas are also used.” -Investopedia
What we think people will find interesting:
We think people will find it interesting to see how lopsided this area seems to be. Especially as Republicans tend to be the party that claims the most “economic success”.
Sidenote:
- Many factors can cause a recession, but one factor most people do not consider is “hoarding money”. When extremely wealthy people or businesses acquire massive amounts of money, that money stops “circulating”. This money does not “trickle down” as a person worth $200 billion does not spend $200 billion. They spend a small portion of that money. Lack of currency circulation is a major cause of recessions. This is why recessions can be combated with “stimulus checks” and the lowering of interest rates. More money in the hands of “the people” can encourage more spending and help restart a stalled economy.
- Many financial experts believe that lowering taxes on the super-wealthy and large businesses as well as not increasing salaries for the working class is one of the main causes of recessions. This may also account for the greater number of recessions under Republican presidents (as they tend to give tax breaks primarily to the extremely wealthy).
